Meet Information: Don Baker Course is just north of the Dakota Dome on the Campus of USD.
Take US 30 to Columbus. From Columbus, take US 81 to Norfolk. You can bypass Columbus by by taking the MONROE ROAD just EAST of the Platte/Merrick County line. Go to Monroe, then take Highway 22 EAST to US 81. Stay on US 81 to Yankton, SD. Go right (EAST) on HIWAY 50 to Vermillion (don't take business exit at Vermillion, stay on main Hiway).

The Islander Cross Country Teams had dominant performances at The University of South Dakota Don Baker Invitational, especially the boy’s team. Though the usual powerhouses of eastern South Dakota (Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Yankton) weren’t present, the Islanders were impressive. The varsity girls were led once again by Hailey Schmidt’s fourth place (16:35.71) finish; it should be noted that she’s battling a fever. The girls found themselves in a battle with Crofton (defending Nebraska D State Champions; currently ranked #2). Considering that all of GISH’s runners competed on Thursday, the girls performed extremely well.
For the boys, they continued to run as a pack throughout the race putting five runners in the top 8 and all seven in the top 14 – truly an impressive performance. The JV also competed extremely well by placing three in the top 8 led by senior Jaden Hesman. The depth of the boy’s team is beginning to show!
This type of meet should help the Islanders realize that they can compete with tired legs and boost their confidence that they are doing things correctly in training. The Islanders have a long ways to go and will need a lot of improvement to contend for a top three place at Districts in October, but they are definitely well on their way. Special recognition to senior Sergio Gomez Oliva for placing in his first meet - great job!
