Young African immigrant takes leadership reins at school with heavy classload, involvement in extracurricular activities

It took a lot for Yasin Ali to get to America.

Now the 17-year-old high school junior wants to make the most of being here.

That’s why he’s taking Advanced Placement classes at Grand Island Senior High, is heavily involved in school clubs and community organizations, and this past summer earned his Certified Nursing Assistant certificate and worked at the Nebraska Veterans Home toward a possible future career in medicine.

“I have been especially pleased with his adaptability,” said Senior High guidance counselor Ron Moran. “He has been able to withstand the emotional strains of this move and has emerged as a leader.”  Full Story
