West Lawn students raising money for playground equipment

A group of West Lawn Elementary School students called 12 K.I.D.S. has a number of fundraisers scheduled this summer to raise money to purchase toddler-sized playground equipment for Grace Abbott Park.

The West Lawn students are fourth- and fifth-graders who attend a reading class as part of the High Ability Learner program at the school. Their teacher is Wanda Stelk, the school’s integration specialist.

12 K.I.D.S. is an acronym for 12 Kids in Direct Service. The students’ goal is to raise $14,000, and they have raised approximately $1,500 to date, Stelk said.

12 K.I.D.S. is affiliated with the Grand Island Education Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. The students have also created a Web site within West Lawn’s Web site at: www.gips.org/Projects_WestLawn/12KIDS/Welcome.html
