GRAND ISLAND —
For Vikki Deuel, who was a Walnut Middle School educator for 37 years, Kay Lyons makes the Purple Hands rally something special to remember.

During the Purple Hands rally, students pledge not to use their hands or words to hurt themselves or others.

"When you look across the Walnut gym and one whole side are Kay Lyons' singers, it's pretty amazing," said Deuel, who retired at the end of last school year as Walnut's principal.

On Friday, Lyons' singers numbered more than 600 students at the Purple Hands rally. Past students also came back to lend their voices to the message of the Purple Hands program.

"I just use all of my students, and they come and they sing," said Lyons, who has been vocal music teacher at Walnut Middle School for 30 years.

The song that the 600-plus-student choir sang was "We're All in This Together" from "High School Musical."  Full Story
