Walnut administrator retiring after nearly four decades in G.I. school district

When she was a special education program coordinator at Walnut Junior High, Vikki Deuel spent part of her summers working with Assistant Principal Bud Nelson on schedules for students.

Deuel, now Walnut principal, vividly remembers the process.

Nelson would use paper clips to literally map out the student's schedule of math, English and all the other classes. When it appeared that the schedule had been set, Nelson would pick up pick up a paper clip and make a "tally mark" for that class. Then, he would pick up the next paper clip and make a tally mark for the next class.

"He would do that for 800, 900 students," Deuel said.

It was a process that would consume most of Nelson's summer.

When Deuel became assistant principal and it was her first time to do the process on her own, she was told that 99 percent of her schedule didn't work for students.

She kept going over the schedule again and again, but couldn't find the flaw. She admitted to feeling totally discouraged.  Full Story
