At 15 minutes before the first school bell of the day, the hallways at Gates Elementary are filled with students walking in circles.
The walking students are not a sign of mass confusion.
It's simply another "Walking Wednesday" at Gates Elementary, a weekly event that began late last fall as the result of brainstorming by the school's wellness committee, a group made up of parents, teachers, school nurse Shirley Wahlgren and Principal Julie Martin.
Although Walking Wednesdays might be one of those adult initiatives that says to kids, "This is good for you," it has proven to be popular with the students. Martin said that parents have told her that Wednesday is the one day of the week when the kids are pressing them to get to school on time. She said kids don't want to miss that start of the walk, which begins at 7:40 a.m. Full Story
