GRAND ISLAND —
Poetry was bouncing off the walls all day at Newell Elementary.
Children's author and musician Mike Mennard worked with all grade
levels at the school, with students coming into the gym to learn about
poetry.
At the end of each session, Mennard invited the kids to bring
themselves and their families back to school from 10 to 11 a.m.
Saturday for a free concert about pirates.
Mennard's work with students gave a hint of the fun his Saturday
morning concert should provide for those who attend. He wore a hat
decorated by a hatband with the skull and crossbones insignia of the
pirate.
His guitar was decorated with a yellow Smiley face wearing a black eye patch.
Whenever Mennard talked, his gravelly voice tended to sound like he was
a pirate. None of the Newell students were scared of him, though.
For his first number to second-graders, Mennard played and sang a tune
called "Someone Ate My Pizza." In his song, Mennard is distressed
because someone ate the pizza he had placed in the refrigerator.
