Uncertain school finances put local spending on hold

Grand Island and Northwest school officials are playing a waiting game on hiring decisions until they learn how much state aid they will receive for the coming school year.

Virgil Harden, business manager for the Grand Island public schools, said Wayne Stelk, GIPS personnel director, is hiring only the people needed to replace teachers who are retiring or resigning from the school system.

Northwest is in the same position. (See accompanying story.)

In a normal budget year, Stelk would also be looking to hire additional elementary teachers for anticipated enrollment increases for the 2009-10 school year, extra staff at the middle school level and also more teachers at Senior High.  Full Story
