The front row: GISH musicians get chance to play with Air Force band

For Grand Island Senior High musicians Austin Gewecke, Derek Benson and Erica McMahon, there was no hiding in the back row when they performed a march Saturday night with the Brass In Blue Air Force Band.
That’s because there was only one row for the Air Force brass ensemble that played Saturday night at the Senior High auditorium.
Senior High band director Louie Eckhardt said that the past two times a military band played at the high school, its leader had asked for high school musicians to sit in and play along on one of the numbers.
“They tell you the specific instruments they want,” said Eckhardt, who noted that he then typically chooses from his principal players in that section of the band.
