Test scores reveal successes and room for improvement
Education test results can be a confusing myriad of numbers that leaves one feeling like they need an advanced degree to understand them.
So let’s boil down the statewide results released last week to a few basic facts:
— Both Grand Island Public School and Northwest students for the most part showed improvement in the second statewide reading test.
— Both Grand Island Public School and Northwest students on the average exceeded or were very close to the statewide average in the first year a test was given in math.
— Statewide, only 62.8 percent of students scored proficient at math.
Let’s look at each of these points in greater detail. First, it’s great news that Grand Island and Northwest students improved in their reading scores. That is the point of these tests: to spur improvement in student learning.
School districts should take the test results and use them in an evaluation of their curriculum and effectiveness of their teaching, time and program. Northwest and Grand Island have done that and the results are impressive.
