Cheryln Townsend, executive director of the Texas Youth Commission, says that Clint Carpenter, superintendent of the Texas Youth Commission School, "has a great understanding of what is best practice in education."
Furthermore, Townsend said, Carpenter "has done an excellent job in bringing those best practices to our school."
Townsend is the last person to comment on finalists for the Grand Island superintendent's job. The Independent last week called school board members who work with the other three finalists for the job, with those interviews published in Sunday's newspaper.
However, when it called the Texas Youth Commission, the paper was informed that the best person to talk to was Townsend, not any of the board members who oversee the Texas Youth Commission, which operates the juvenile justice system in that state. The Independent was unable to reach Townsend until Monday.
While Townsend is Carpenter's direct supervisor, she said the Texas Youth Commission board also interacts quite a bit with Carpenter. "He (Carpenter) has a great relationship with our board," she said.
Townsend described Carpenter as being very good in vocational certification and also very good in promoting teacher and staff development.
"He is really an expert at school finance," she added.
