Superintendent candidate explores G.I.

Clint Carpenter, one of four finalists for the job of Grand Island Public Schools superintendent, said one of the most interesting things he learned during his visit to Grand Island on Monday was the close ties between the community — particularly the business community — and the school system.

Carpenter made his comments during a brief Monday afternoon press conference, one of several groups of people he met with during the day.

Carpenter said he had met with many people on Monday who talked about their children being educated in the Grand Island school district, as well as their own involvement and volunteer activities with the district.

Many times, there is a disconnect between the school district and the community, but that is not the case in Grand Island, Carpenter said.

He told reporters that he considers Grand Island to be a progressive school district, citing its implementation of a truancy court to deal with chronically absent students, its work with high-performance students, as well as its work with English language learners and special education students. He said the Grand Island school district is very interested in seeing all its students succeed.  Full Story
