Clay Blanks, an eighth-grader at Wilcox-Hildreth, was curious to know if there was a better way to help soil retain water so farmers could conserve it.

So he wondered if the material in a baby’s diaper that holds moisture could be mixed into the soil to improve the soil’s moisture retention ability.

Blanks’ science fair project didn’t go the way he thought it would. He found that the polymers used in a diaper to retain moisture did so in the soil, but they didn’t release the water in a way to benefit the plants in his experiment.

But that didn’t dampen Blanks’ enthusiasm. His next project, he said, is to see if the soil with the polymers could retain water well enough to prevent runoff.  Full Story
