The Grand Island Public Schools were listed as "need improvement" for district middle school students in reading, as well as district high school students in reading, according to information released by the Nebraska Department of Education Tuesday.
At the individual building level, Howard Elementary, Barr Middle School and Grand Island Senior High were given the label of "needs improvement" in reading.
For the Northwest Public Schools, middle school students were listed as "needs improvement" for reading.
The "needs improvement" label is given by the federal government when students at any particular grade level – elementary, middle school or high school – do not meet the federal benchmark in the same curriculum area, either reading or math, for two consecutive years.
