Students rode GIPS school buses more than 76,000 times this year

The new Grand Island public schools bus system has transported tens of thousands of kids this past school year.

Steve Burkholder, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, said about 225 students per day are riding school buses at the end of the year.

He said that number includes 35 students on the Grand Island Senior High bus, 65 students on the Barr Middle School bus, 30 students on one Walnut Middle School bus and 45 students on another Walnut Middle School bus route, and 50 students on an elementary route that serves several K-5 schools.

Mick Brown of First Holiday Tour and Travel, which has the contract to operate the buses for the school district, has a slightly different figure.  Full Story
