Students named National Merit semifinalists

Published: Sunday, September 19, 2010 9:51 PM CDT
Five area students have been named as semifinalists for the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program.

They are Sara Mirza of Grand Island Senior High, Clay Koziol of of Central Central City High School, Anna Faeh of Nebraska Christian High School in Central City, Kathleen Anderson of Cross County Community High School in Stromsburg and Peter Baek of Wood River Rural High School.

All five seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,400 National Merit Scholarships that are collectively worth $36 million. The scholarships will be awarded next spring.

About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screening of program entrants.

The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.  Full Story
