The Dodge Elementary School third-grader earned the trip skyward through the Central Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross’ Great Escapes safety program. Blath’s escape plan was chosen from those drawn by third-graders from 16 Grand Island elementary schools.
"This is as high as he wants to go," Fire Chief Tim Hiemer called to the ground as he and Blath moved the ladder back and forth in front of City Hall. The bucket wasn’t quite even with the top of the building.
Once he reached the ground, Austyn’s mom, DeAngel Lamberson, took photos of her beaming son in front of the truck.
The boy described the experience as "fun and exciting and fantastic."
Lamberson said having her son’s plan win was "overwhelming and exciting." She said both she and Austyn’s stepfather helped him write up the plan. Austyn walked around the house trying out the plan as he drew it up and even told his 3-year-old sister, Mackenzie, what she needs to do if there is a fire. Full Story
