While Grand Island Superintendent Steve Joel wrote yesterday about how amazed he was by the 55 hours per week that Chinese students spend in the classroom, today he reveals that Chinese educators are envious of parts of the American education system, because it puts less emphasis on rote learning. He also writes about his desire to one return to Chongqing, accompanied by other educators from Grand Island."

"We spent most of the day today meeting with teachers and administrators from many schools. The exchange of ideas and information was interesting and enlightening.

It became even more apparent that Chinese educators want to be more like their American counterparts. They feel that all the emphasis on rote learning is impeding the overall growth of their students in terms of leading a balanced life. They are very much interested in having continued dialogue with our schools.

This afternoon we had a signing ceremony that was quite an event. Several of our school districts agreed to become sister schools to those that we visited. The cooperative relationships will lead to future exchanges of teachers, administrators and students.  Full Story
