In his latest blog, Grand Island Superintendent Steve Joel writes about his experiences as a "Chinese-as-a-second-language" student; how he got his Christmas shopping done early this year with some help from a Chinese mentor who taught him how to bargain; and the joys of having a middle seat on the flight home.
"Our final day in China was a series of workshops and presentations by both American and Chinese educators with experience in language programs.
I was able to learn more about the many grant opportunities to establish teacher exchanges and bringing the Chinese language to Grand Island. It appears that American high schools can bring in Chinese language teachers on three-year grants. Many of the states here want to make Chinese available to their students beginning the primary grades.
Another seminar I participated in was to learn how Chinese is relatively simple (yeah, right....). We learned to count and say the days and months of the year. Without having to conjugate verbs, it actually seemed easy and the session was fun. I would like to learn more.
