State releases AYP results

The Grand Island public schools met all 459 federal benchmarks for adequate yearly progress, or AYP, under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, according to the Nebraska State Report Card released on Monday.

Northwest public schools, meanwhile, missed three of 125 federal AYP benchmarks, according to Jane Brown, Northwest curriculum coordinator.

Northwest missed reading and math benchmarks for special education students in eighth grade. It also missed the benchmark for kids living in poverty (those receiving free and reduced-price lunch) on math at Cedar Hollow School.

This is the second straight year that the Northwest district has missed in those first two categories. So it has been put on the "needs improvement" list for the current school year when it comes to academic achievement for eighth-grade special education students in reading and math, Brown said.  Full Story
