Shoemaker Elementary School was locked down briefly Tuesday morning after a man with an ax was reported to be in the area.

Grand Island police Capt. Pete Kortum said officers received a call at about 11 a.m. reporting that a man in the 300 block of Arapahoe Avenue was walking around with an ax.

Shoemaker Elementary is located at 4160 Old Potash Highway, which is within blocks of Arapahoe Avenue.

A supervising officer called the school as officers proceeded to the area. Within about 10 minutes, the supervisor called the school back to say a man had been taken into custody, Kortum said.  Full Story
