Seuss birthday celebrated with reading, theme days, free books

Monday was Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which means it also was Read Across the Grand Island Public Schools Day.

Students and schools across the city celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birth with a variety of activities. Those included having children read books, have adults go into Grand Island’s schools to read to kids and having students go to various retirement centers to read to senior citizens.

Because the day honored Dr. Seuss, quite a bit of whimsy was mixed in with all the reading activities.

A person dressed as the Cat in the Hat read to kindergartners through second-grade students at Gates Elementary, then gave Tootsie Rolls to third- through fifth-graders to urge them to “roll into reading.”  Full Story
