Senior High orchestra director has taught in all 18 of district’s schools

GRAND ISLAND —
Christa Speed has spent her entire 30-year teaching career in the Grand Island public schools.

That represents longevity and stability.

But in many ways, Speed's résumé could also read, "Have strings, will travel."

Speed teaches orchestra at Grand Island Senior High, but her  duties also include teaching two string instrument classes at Walnut Middle School and one string instrument class at Barr Middle School.

She also teaches string instruments to students at Dodge, Starr, Wasmer, Lincoln, Howard and Jefferson elementary schools.

Fellow string teacher Marla Rischling teaches one class at Walnut, two classes at Barr, one class at Westridge Middle School and classes at all the other elementary schools.

Other than the classes at Senior High, Speed said, there is a practical reason for that division, even if it does not have the elegance of rhyme.  Full Story
