GRAND ISLAND —
At first glance, Joanne Garrison seems like a typical Midwestern native.

Born and raised in East Lansing, Mich. … graduated from James Madison College of Michigan State University … worked briefly for an insurance company before going to work for a nonprofit foundation … eventually got her teaching degree and began a career in education.

That career now has her working as the coordinator for the Grand Island public schools' Welcome Center, where her primary duties are assessing the English-speaking skills of immigrant students to ensure they are placed in the proper class setting.

But Garrison's life has details that are much more interesting than that standard biography.  Full Story
