School staff cuts met with objections

The Grand Island school board got its first strong push-back against proposed budget cuts Monday night, with people arguing against fine arts cuts, with several specifically arguing against a reduction-in-force notice that apparently will soon be issued to Senior High vocal music teacher Jeff Vyhlidal.

Despite self-described efforts to keep cuts away from the classroom, Senior High Principal Kent Mann said high school classroom enrollment may grow because of the funding reductions. Virgil Harden, GIPS finance director, said most K-2 classrooms will remain at 20 students or fewer.

All budget cuts were decided as a result of collaboration between central office administrators and building principals. No formal RIF notices have been issued, but Harden said staff members were informally told about the pending layoffs prior to Monday night’s meeting.  Full Story
