School district to get more state aid than expected

Nebraska Department of Education projections of how much state aid each school district would receive under LB235 show that Grand Island will receive almost $2.3 million more than the “worst-case scenario” that Virgil Harden, Grand Island Public Schools business director, has been using to craft a 2011-12 budget.

The projections were released on Thursday.

In an interview with The Independent, Harden said Grand Island is still receiving $5.7 million less than if the state aid formula was fully funded. However, Harden has been using a worst-case scenario of an $8 million drop in state aid.

As a result, Harden said it could be possible to implement a number of “add-backs” discussed by school board members during their retreat on March 25 and 26. Furthermore, the $2.3 million improvement in the state aid picture means that those add-backs can be accomplished without a $2 million drawdown in the school district’s cash reserve.  Full Story
