While most attention has been fixed on a search for a person to replace Grand Island Superintendent Steve Joel on either a permanent or interim basis, the Grand Island school system has been making a number of other changes in its administrative team.

Superintendent Steve Joel traveled out of town on Friday to interview two candidates for the position of assistant superintendent for teaching and learning.

That person will be replacing Vern Fisher, who has accepted a job as superintendent of the South Sioux City school system. Fisher is leaving when there are several major initiatives under way in curriculum.

One of those changes involves revamping the SANDS alternative high school curriculum. The school district is planning on building a new facility for the SANDS program, but Fisher has been working with a committee to also revise the SANDS curriculum.

Fisher said committee members are Sue Burch, director of technology; Senior High Principal Kent Mann; Senior High Assistant Principal Cindy Wells; Tammy Pickering, director of the alternative high school program; Senior High alternative education social worker Dawn Deuel-Rutt; SANDS teacher Laurie Clark; Walnut Principal Rod Foley; Brian Kort, Barr assistant principal; alternative middle school teacher Richard Soto; Gwen Brown, chairwoman of the Senior High counseling department; Nancy Schisler, director of secondary teaching and learning; Deb Harder, director of elementary teaching and learning; and Robin Dexter, assistant superintendent for student services.  Full Story
