The Grand Island school board has hired McPherson & Jacobson as the search firm to help it find Grand Island's next superintendent to replace Steve Joel, who will become superintendent for the Lincoln Public Schools on July 1.

Thursday's vote confirmed the unofficial decision made Wednesday night after board members interviewed representatives from three search firms. The board is scheduled to meet with McPherson & Jacobson representatives next Tuesday evening to get the search process under way.

In other action Thursday, the board not only reviewed, but approved, a contract with Ombudsman, a private company that will work with the district's expelled students and students who are in the court system to help those young people work toward getting a high school degree.

Originally, the board was only going to review the proposed contract and then approve it at the May board meeting. However, the agenda was amended because Ombudsman needs 120 days to prepare for the start of the program in Grand Island.

Business manager Virgil Harden told board members that if they delayed action until May, Ombudsman would not get started until sometime in early September. The program is supposed to run in conjunction with the district school calendar and Harden said any delay in starting Ombudsman would mean the school district would be paying for services not provided.  Full Story
