School board to vote on district boundary proposals

The Grand Island school board will be asked on Monday night to vote on proposed boundaries for the three districts that elect its membership.

Boundary lines must be redrawn to reflect population shifts within the school district that were revealed as a result of the official 2010 Census. The perfect ideal would be one person, one vote, but there is no requirement to have absolutely equal numbers of residents in each Grand Island Public Schools ward. The law requires roughly equal representation when it comes to voting people into public office.

During the October meeting, the school board looked at two proposals for boundaries for the three wards. Each of the three wards elects three board members, for a total of nine people on the Grand Island school board.

During the October meeting, several people expressed a preference for Option 2. In that scenario, Ward 1 on the fast-growing west side of the city would have the fewest number of residents, so people living in that area would be slightly over-represented by having three people on the Grand Island school board. However, the assumption is that the west side of the city will continue to be the fastest growing area of Grand Island. If that assumption is correct, representation should equal out over the course of the next 10 years.  Full Story
