The Grand Island school board will be asked to approve the 2010-11 budget when it meets Thursday evening at the Kneale Administration Building.

Board members reviewed the proposed budget at a workshop Tuesday evening. (See story elsewhere in today's Independent.) The regular board meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 6:40 p.m., will be preceded by a budget hearing and by a hearing on the proposed property tax levy needed to support the 2010-11 budget.

During the regular meeting, the board will be asked to approve the budget for the coming year, then it will be asked to approve the property tax resolution for 2010-11.

In other action, the board will be asked to change the names of the SANDS alternative high school program to Success Academy. The name change comes with changes in the program and plans to have a new building for the Success Academy with the start of the 2011-12 school year.

Another action item on the agenda is a proposal to hire one English language learner teacher, one bilingual paraeducator and a half-time attendance clerk at Howard Elementary, which has seen a significant increase in enrollment. Howard had 391 students last year, but now has 428 students, an increase of 37 students in one year.

The written rationale for the staff changes has said that it has been traditional for the school district to hire an additional half-time attendance clerk any time an elementary school's enrollment exceeds 425 students.  Full Story
