The Grand Island school board quickly decided Wednesday morning that its first step in finding a person to replace Steve Joel as superintendent should be hiring a search firm.

Joel was formally hired Tuesday night as the new superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools.

The Grand Island school board will meet at 5:15 p.m. April 5 to discuss proposals submitted by search firms. The next step likely will be picking two or three firms for interviews.

Board members reached those conclusions Wednesday morning immediately after accepting Joel's resignation, effective June 30. Joel's first day as Lincoln's superintendent will be July 1.

In the interim, Joel will spend time in both districts, using his accumulated vacation days to spend time in Lincoln. Joel said he will be involved in some of the key hires for Lincoln for the 2010-11 school year.

However, he will attend all Grand Island school board meetings for the remainder of his time in the district and also will be involved in the major budget planning meetings for the 2010-11 school year.

Joel said he will not be involved in the superintendent search. However, should a candidate call him to ask about the district, Joel said, he will tell that person that Grand Island represents a wonderful job opportunity.

He said he would help anybody who is hired as a Grand Island superintendent make the transition to the new job. He noted that Lincoln Superintendent Susan Gourley will be helping him make his own transition.  Full Story
