The Grand Island school board likely will be asked Thursday evening to hire a search firm to help it find someone to replace Steve Joel as superintendent.

The board met Monday night to review proposals from companies interested in doing the work. It will meet Wednesday evening to interview the firms that submitted the top proposals.

Representatives from Hazard, Young Attea and Associates, McPherson and Jacobsen, and Ray & Associates will all be interviewed Wednesday evening.

The only other action item on the agenda is a routine recognition of the Grand Island Education Association as the bargaining unit for the district's teachers.

However, two information items on the agenda would make major changes in the way the district does business.

One is a review of a proposed contract with Ombudsman, a private company that would provide educational services to students who have been expelled and students who are in the court system. The other is a review of a possible extended-year calendar for the 2011-12 school year.  Full Story
