The Grand Island school board will be asked Thursday evening to renew a contract with the Hall County for a deputy county attorney to continue to conduct truancy hearings for students who are chronically late or absent from school.

The Grand Island school board and Hall County have had a contract for the past two years that has allowed Deputy County Attorney Marty Klein to conduct truancy hearings involving the student, the student's parents or guardians, and various school personnel.

Chronic truancy can become a prosecutable offense, but the purpose of truancy court is to work out a voluntary plan that improves student attendance before it becomes an official court case. Under the agreement, GIPS will pay Hall County $40,000 for part-time truancy work done by a deputy county attorney.

The board also will be asked to renew a contract to pay $446,000 to Mid-Plains Center for Behavioral Healthcare Services to provide day treatment services for K-12 students who need behavioral health services.

With the start of the new Ombudsman program to educate GIPS students who have either been expelled or who are involved in the juvenile court system, school officials believe they can now contract with Mid-Plains to provide behavioral health services to more Grand Island students than in previous years.

Also on Thursday, the board will review a draft copy of a proposed SANDS handbook of operating principles for the alternative education program.  Full Story
