The Grand Island school board routinely approved the 2010-11 budget and property tax resolutions Thursday night after conducting two public hearings earlier in the evening in which no one from the public spoke about either the budget or the property taxes needed to support it.
There was little board discussion on either the budget or property taxes because board members met in a special Tuesday evening workshop to review the budget, which in many ways is a status quo spending plan.
The general fund portion of the budget, which finances most of the day-to-day operations of the school district, increased by 3.72 percent. On Tuesday, business manager Virgil Harden said that increase was due to two factors.
One was the 4.5 percent increase in pay and benefits for teachers, administrators and classified staff such as school secretaries, food service workers, maintenance personnel, paraeducators and other school staff members.
The second factor is an increase in the number of school staff members that are needed to keep pace with the district's growing enrollment.
