Police chief to students: Read, read, read

GRAND ISLAND —
The blue uniform was a dead giveaway.

Because of the uniform, Jane Kipper's fourth-graders at Howard Elementary immediately knew Steve Lamken is a member of the Grand Island Police Department.

Lamken's appearance on Tuesday elicited an immediate storm of questions from the students, who at first couldn't quite figure out that he didn't personally chase down Grand Island's bad guys.

"He's like Mrs. Schnitzler," Kipper said, referring to Howard Principal Julie Schnitzler.

Lamken agreed, noting that his job involves making sure the rest of the police officers are doing their jobs correctly.

Lamken was one of many people who were peppered with questions about their jobs on Tuesday.

City officials, people with the Grand Island and Northwest school districts, and business people all visited classrooms as part of National Young Readers Day.

Many probably got questions about themselves or their jobs.  Full Story
