Only 5 GIPS teacher layoffs planned

The number of reduction-in-force notices for teachers in the Grand Island school district is down to just five, according to a personnel committee report given Thursday by Grand Island school board member Bonnie Hinkle.

The board early this year had authorized central administration to issue "up to 20" reduction-in-force (RIF) notices because of an anticipated shortfall in state aid to education. A total of 18 staff members were verbally informed they faced the possibility of a RIF, although the actual number of written RIF notices issued turned out to be 14.

However, the picture on the anticipated shortfall has brightened since that time, so Hinkle was able to give a brighter report on RIF notices.  Full Story
