New sidewalk for Knickrehm students

December isn’t really sidewalk-installing weather, but it will be this year near Knickrehm Elementary School.

The Grand Island school of 250 students has 60 residing in the Capital Mobile Home Park. Their route to school will be altered later this month as BNSF begins work on adding a second main-line track to its elevated rail through Grand Island. The work was to begin in early November, but the start date has continued to be pushed back.

The rail-line construction will mean that Capital Avenue will be reduced to one-lane traffic near Knickrehm and that the Capital Avenue pedestrian through the elevated rail berm tunnel will be closed, causing students to divert to a second tunnel about 200 feet to the southeast.


City Councilman John Gericke raised concerns about the students last week because he doubted a sidewalk led to the second tunnel.
