Grand Island, Nebraska: Every Student, Every Day, A Success!
Grand Island Senior High junior Anna Toner said she had never seen either the movie or stage version of "The Music Man."
But
Toner, who portrays Marian Paroo in the GISH presentation of "The Music
Man," said she definitely knew all about "Seventy-six Trombones," one
of the show’s many hit songs. Toner said she knows she is not alone.
"People know the melody right away," she said.
That demonstrates just how deeply "The Music Man" has woven its
way into American culture. A catch phrase such as "Marian the
librarian" isn’t just used in connection with the show; it’s often used
to denote the demeanor of all librarians, prim and proper, a person who
is interested in books and culture.
Likewise, the catch phrase,
"You’ve got trouble," can occasionally pop up in everyday conversation
when somebody wants to give a humorous twist to any vexing situation
that might pop up. The phrase, of course, is based on the song, "(Ya
Got) Trouble." Full Story
