For the Grand Island school district, the motto is not "Build it and they will come."

The motto is more like "The students keep coming, so we have to keep building more classrooms."

Since the 2000-01 school year, the Grand Island school district has added 11 modular buildings and one four-classroom stick-frame annex building.

That's an additional 26 classrooms, just slightly more rooms than would be found in two, two-unit elementary schools. A two-unit elementary school has two classrooms per grade for a total of 12 regular education classrooms.

Of course, a complete grade school would also have "core facilities" such as a cafeteria, a gymnasium and library, as well as extra specialty classrooms for music, special education and English language learners.

In addition to those 26 modular and annex classrooms, the district has added another 14 brick-and-mortar classrooms during the past decade, raising the total to 40 newer classrooms. Nine of the brick-and-mortar classrooms were added at Dodge Elementary and another five at Howard Elementary.  Full Story
