Gwen Brown, chairwoman of the Senior High counseling department, gave the school board a brief outline Thursday of the intervention strategies that counselors are using to help credit-deficient students graduate from high school.
Credit-deficient students are those who have not passed enough classes to graduate eight semesters after entering Senior High as freshmen.
Brown's presentation showed how many students are credit-deficient at each grade level as well as how many students are deficient by category: students enrolled in regular education classes, students enrolled in special education classes and students enrolled in English language learner classes.
By program, 72 students in regular education classes are credit deficient, 15 students in special education classes are credit deficient and 119 students in ELL classes are credit deficient.
Brown, though, showed a chart that revealed the majority of ELL students are not so much credit deficient for failing to achieve a passing grade in a class as they are "core deficient" for not having enough credits in core classes, especially English, to be able to graduate from high school in eight semesters.
