Knickrehm students hear Lewis and Clark speaker

For nearly an hour Friday morning, Knickrehm Elementary fourth- and fifth-graders traveled with George Drouillard along the Lewis and Clark Expedition, letting their imaginations soar like the red-tailed hawk.

Drouillard — in real life, Darrel Draper of Omaha — spoke to the students in a French-Canadian accent, telling about life from his birth as the son of Pierre Drouillard and a Shawnee woman to his death.

“I was raised in the village of my mother,” said “Drouillard,” who said that when he got older, he asked why he had a white man’s name while all the other boys had Indian names.

His mother told him he must be guided by his spirit brother.  Full Story
