GRAND ISLAND —
Six trees ring Knickrehm Elementary, all earned by fifth-graders who won the Nebraska Arbor Day Poster contest.
The latest fifth-grader to join the winner circle is Jacob Rojas, who
won this year's contest, which has the theme, "Trees Are Terrific ...
inside and out."
That earned $250 for Knickrehm Elementary. The school used the money to
buy a burr oak from Sundance nursery, which provided a special price on
the tree.
Rojas had the honor of being the first fifth-grader from Diane Meyer's
classroom to scatter mulch in the perfectly round depression where the
tree was planted.
Rojas was joined by his classmates, who took handfuls of mulch and
filled the depression to about the halfway mark, leaving the crew from
Sundance the job of completing the mulching.
