Islander band may meet up with Huskers at Gator Bowl

GRAND ISLAND —
When the Syracuse football team defeated Notre Dame on Saturday on a last-minute touchdown pass, Grand Island Senior High junior Zach Muessel sent his friend Lucas Elsbernd a celebratory text message.

It wasn't that Muessel was that excited to see Syracuse win. Actually, he realized that, thanks to the jumbled mess that is the college football bowl selection process, Notre Dame's loss paved the way for Nebraska to possibly appear in its first-ever Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Gator Bowl, coincidentally, is where Muessel, Elsbernd and the other members of the Islander band are playing on Jan. 1.

The prospect of seeing his beloved Huskers play on New Year's Day increased Muessel's interest in the trip "10 to one," he said.

Muessel's not the only one who's excited about the opportunity. When the band's first-year director Louie Eckhardt announced the scenario to the band Monday morning, he got quite a response.
