Indian virtuoso demands concentration from Senior High students

Focus and discipline.

Those words were music to Grand Island Senior High Band Director Louie Eckhardt's ears when Indian musician Sandip Burman used them for a master class at the school.

Burman's Monday morning audience included both Senior High band members and music theory students.

As kids filed onto the stage in the Senior High auditorium, Burman asked Eckhardt to remind them about a request he had made prior to the class.

Pointing first to his ear and then pressing his index finger to his lips, Eckhardt told students, "Everything is supposed to go in, and nothing is to come out."

In other words, they were supposed to pay close attention to the Indian tabla musician, who has performed with musicians such as Ravi Shankar, Bela Fleck and Randy Brecker.  Full Story
