The teachers' bright green T-shirts said it all: "Howling Huskies Leading the Pack!"

Howard Elementary is "leading the pack" in several respects. On Wednesday, its students, parents and teachers became the first to start the 2011-12 school year for the Grand Island Public Schools.

The first day of classes for K-9 students in the district's remaining 17 school buildings will be Aug. 17, with sophomores, juniors and seniors at Grand Island Senior High not beginning school until Aug. 18.  Full Story
