Hastings eighth-grader Joe Prickett made an early morning appearance at Engleman Elementary School in Grand Island on Monday to thank students for the money they have contributed toward his Free Wheelchair Mission project and to urge them to keep up the good work through the end of the month.
The Engleman Elementary Character Council took on the project of raising money to send wheelchairs to help the disabled who live in Third World countries. The Character Council has asked fellow Engleman students, parents and staff to join in the effort.
Engleman counselor Sherry Jones said that through Monday morning, approximately $960 has been raised -- enough to purchase and ship 16 wheelchairs to a Third World country.
Posters in the school cafeteria have helped track how much each class has raised toward the cost of sending a wheelchair overseas. Jones said an additional wheelchair component is added to the poster each time an additional $8.45 is collected by a class or by Engleman staff.
