The Grand Island school board will get its first look on Thursday evening at three ways to redraw the lines on the three wards in the Grand Island school district.

Three people from each ward are elected to the nine-member board. Ward lines must be redrawn as a result of the 2010 Census, which counted Grand Island's population as of April 1, 2010.

The 2010 Census not only counted the city's total population, but also tallied the total population in each part of the city. Under the principle of one person, one vote, boundaries for each ward in the school district must be redrawn so each of the three areas has roughly the same population.

Ward 1 covers the western portion of Grand Island. Ward 2 extends from central Grand Island to southern Grand Island, along both Highway 281 and South Locust; and Ward 3 also covers a portion of central Grand Island, with its territory extending to the northeast and eastern sections of the city and school district.  Full Story
