GRAND ISLAND —
State Sen.-elect Mike Gloor got some quick lessons about the Grand Island school district on Monday when he visited Howard Elementary.

The visit was the idea of Howard Principal Julie Schnitzler, who wanted Gloor to see why it takes additional resources for adequate yearly progress standards under the federal education law called No Child Left Behind.

Under the federal law, not only entire school districts and schools but individual student populations within the school system must meet federal standards for student achievement.

Such groups include students as a whole, students from various ethnic groups, English language learners, students living in poverty as measured by kids receiving free and reduced-price school lunches, special education students and so on.

For the current school year, the 18 schools in the Grand Island school system must meet 450 separate standards. Failure to meet even one means the entire school district does not meet federal AYP.  Full Story
