If the Grand Island school board approves the change, the Grand Island Senior High graduating class of 2013 will have its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19.
That would be only a few days before Thursday, May 23, when all other students would be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. for summer vacation.
Dismissing seniors only 3½ days before other Grand Island Public School students represents a break from the past because seniors have typically completed their final year of high school much earlier.
For example, the 2011-12 school calendar has commencement on May 13, with the end of school for all other students coming at 11:30 a.m. May 24.
The Grand Island school board got its first look at the proposed 2012-13 school calendar during its December meeting Thursday evening. The later graduation date sparked some discussion, with most of it positive.
One school board member said the later graduation may be an advantage for seniors who are enrolled in AP courses because the testing dates for national AP examinations often come after the students’ commencement.
