GISH survey shows students feel safe at school

Results of a student survey about the semi-lockdown on Feb. 3 at Grand Island Senior High show a wide variety of opinions -- in fact, in a few cases, students had opinions diametrically opposed to each other -- but there's agreement on one important fact: Most kids feel safe at school.

That last fact was first reported by Audie Aguilar, the student representative to the Grand Island school board. She told board members Thursday a survey of sophomores, juniors and seniors taken after the Feb. 3 semi-lockdown showed 91 percent of the students feel safe.

Principal Kent Mann said several questions were asked of about 1,600 students in Oasis classes at Senior High. Mann discussed some of the answers to those questions with The Independent following Aguilar's report to the board.

While the majority of the students said they felt safe at Senior High, Mann said, the question also asked, "Why or why not?" Mann said, of those who said they did not feel safe, some said the additional police officers at the school on Feb. 3 made them feel uncertain.  Full Story
